The Future of the Elm Tree – Restoring Elm to the Landscape

Conference at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew – 28th June 2022

How can we bring back the elm trees that once defined our landscape?

This is the subject of a major conference at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew on 28th June 2022. Leading international experts from Spain, the USA, the Netherlands and Britain will be speaking, answering questions, and discussing the availability of Dutch elm disease resistant elms.

The conference will look at what needs to be done to establish elms in the landscape, in addition to the use of elms in the urban environment. Building knowledge of disease resistance is critical in developing an effective response to the proliferation and devastation of tree diseases such as ash dieback. Developing the role of elms in the ecology of our countryside and cityscapes will be an important part of the biological response to climate change.

The conference is supported by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and Defra, with sponsorship from Hillier Nurseries, Strutt & Parker, and Gravetye Charitable Trust. The conference is being organised and hosted by the Institute of Chartered Foresters.

The Future of the Elm Tree: Restoring Elm to the Landscape will be a hybrid event, taking place both in-person at Kew and online. National Tree Officers Conference 2022 – Invitation to Present

We’re excited to announce the launch of the National Tree Officers Conference 2022!

Building on the success of six previous events, we’re delighted that the conference is returning to its roots and will take place physically in Telford on the 9^th November. This will be the first face-to-face National Tree Officers Conference in three years and we’re looking forward to seeing everyone in-person again.

Developed by tree officers for tree officers, the National Tree Officers Conference 2022 will be a fantastic opportunity for tree, woodland and planning officers to present to their peers on the latest research, best practice and innovation across a wide variety of local authority arboricultural and urban forestry work.

We’re looking for presentation proposals relating to the following subject areas:

• Pests and diseases
  • Planting and species selection (including tree planting for climate change)
  • Planning
  • Ancient/Veteran Tree management
  • Biosecurity
  • Managing physical damage to trees (e.g. deer, squirrel, dog or vandalism)
  • Public engagement
  • Local authority tree management (including tree felling procedures, risk assessment and subsidence)
  • Use of tree data for management, information and influence
  
  The above list is not exhaustive – we would welcome any subject of relevance to local authority tree management.

Submissions will be reviewed by the conference steering group with quality, relevance, the practical nature of the material and potential audience appeal as key assessment criteria.
